Instructional Programs English Learner Program The goal of the RVUSD English Learner Program is for all English learners to develop proficiency in both English and the districts core curriculum. Students in the EL Program receive classroom instruction from teachers qualified to work with English learners. Lessons are presented using strategies specifically designed to accommodate various levels of English language development and to give all students the support needed to access the core curriculum. English learners receive additional assistance for meeting reading and writing standards through the Title I program and the services of instructional assistants. EL instructional assistants further aid English learners with language acquisition and provide the primary language support needed for understanding key lessons. Students initially qualify for the program through the results of the CELDT (California English Language Development Test). Qualified students then take the test annually to determine their academic and language acquisition levels. The results of the CELDT are used in combination with the STAR, District Standards Assessment, and report cards to determine whether a student is making progress toward re-designation as a fluent English proficient learner. This is a formal process involving input from parents and the classroom teacher, as well as the EL assistant, Title I teacher, and principal. The Rincon Valley Union School District currently has approximately 140 students, or 5% of the student population, participating in the English Language Learners Program. |
