Technology

Technology can virtually bring the world to the child, providing a depth and richness of instructional approaches that reach children. Our goal is to help students become active producers and consumers of information, able to communicate effectively and critically analyze the ever-increasing flow of data that they receive. The children become "knowledge architects" using the rich resources that technology provides at their fingertips. It can bring personal meaning and expression to the curriculum through a unique and powerful medium. The district currently provides a technology program in grades three through six, and students can complete their written work or practice their skills on the computer labs or in the classroom, which supports one computer networked to the lab. Students have access to a variety of technology including digital cameras and scanners to support the presentation of their written and oral projects.

Networked technology systems permit efficient and effective communications within and outside the district. A district-wide network and infrastructure is in place that connects all school sites and classrooms. This provides students the ability to communicate student-to-student, class-to-class, and school-to-school.

Immediate technology plans include developing an integrated curriculum and technology program through which students engage in the use of technology on a daily basis as they move through their day's work in reading, math, science, and social studies. A number of classrooms utilize SmartBoard technology, adding another layer to student interaction with both technology and curriculum.

Access to learning with technology will be promoted as a community investment, encouraging active partnerships between schools, businesses, homes, and the community.

 Computer Labs

The Rincon Valley Union School District recognizes that technology is an important component in the lives of students today. We realize that students need to know how to use technology and that we need to provide opportunities for them to learn and use technology at school. Technology skills are imperative for the 21st century learner as we prepare them for higher education and the work place.

The Rincon Valley District has a developed a technology plan which includes the use of a media center for students. As part of the media center, each school in our district has a computer lab with at least 30 computers for student access. By then end of February 2011, all of our schools should be upgraded to fiber optic, which will greatly increase our speed and allow for better connectivity with web-based curriculum sites. All students in 3rd – 6th grade go to the computer lab with their class twice a week for 45 minutes each time. Students in Kindergarten – 2nd grade have access to the lab as well, determined by the classroom teacher as scheduling allows.

Students work on various assignments in the computer lab, which include learning typing skills, how to navigate a keyboard, saving a document, Internet browsing etiquette, and also work on many educational web sites and educational software. Students also learn many computer related concepts, increasing their technological education as well as enhancing learning from their core classroom instruction.

Each school has a computer lab technician who ensures that all the computers are operating properly. This includes making sure all students have login access to a computer, as well as helping the students with various tasks during their time in the lab. The classroom teacher is also in the lab with the students helping teach the lessons.

Rincon Valley Union School District will continue to make technology education a priority for our students and ensure we have the proper equipment in our fabulous labs, striving to give our students the best.

SmartBoards are used in some upper grade classes at each school site.
