Instructional Programs

Title 1 Reading

Title I is a federally funded program that is used to support effective, research-based educational strategies that close the achievement gap between high-and low-performing students and enable students to meet the state's challenging academic standards. Title I funds are based on the number of students receiving free and reduced lunches. Following rigid federal guidelines, the poverty ranking of the district is determined. Those schools that rank the highest in number of free and reduced lunches receive the funds. The allocation of funds per school is then based upon a calculation determined by the federal government.

Title I programs in the RVUSD schools are provided at Matanzas, Spring Creek, Village, and Whited Schools. The programs at these schools provide extra assistance to low achieving students in grades one through six. The goal of the program is to ensure that students can meet academic achievement standards when presented with a challenging curriculum. Assistance in small group settings is provided by Title I teachers who are required to be highly qualified professionals. Using researched based materials and instructional strategies, Title I teachers provide the additional support that low achieving students need to ensure success in meeting rigorous academic standards.

Students qualify for the Title I program based upon multiple measures which include teacher recommendation, STAR test results, CAT/6 test results for first grade students and District Standards assessments in grades 2 – 6. Student progress is monitored by the Title I teacher. When a student has made substantial progress, he continues to be monitored by the Title I teacher for one year. If the student continues to meet grade level expectations, he no longer requires Title 1 services.
