Dear RVUSD Families,

Over the past two days, Governor Newsom has cast doubt about students returning to school this year. This is not a directive from the state, but it is a reminder that no one knows what the next weeks will bring. This announcement has caused a lot of anxiety among school communities throughout the state with people raising questions about graduation, grades and extended school year. RVUSD is preparing for multiple scenarios and how to care for our community. Please know that the questions being asked are real, unprecedented and being faced at a state and national level. We are all new at this, and things will change and adjust as we refine and learn. We will continue to keep you informed.

For now, here are a few basics of our plan for serving students as we move forward.

School Lunches:

Free Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

When: March 23-27 and March 30-April 3; 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM

Where:

Village Elementary, 900 Yulupa Ave., Santa Rosa

Whited Elementary, 4995 Sonoma Hwy., Santa Rosa

 Who:

All children in the community, 18 years and younger, must be present to receive a meal.

Distance Learning:  On Monday, March 23rd, the district office will be providing learning packets for all TK-6th grade students.  These will be provided online via a pdf link, or in person at the district office. If you do not have the ability to access the learning packets online and print (approximately 50 pages) the different pages, we will have staff at the district office, located at 1000 Yulupa Ave.; Santa Rosa, handing out packets in person from 11:30AM-1:30PM.  This will be a drive through pick-up in order to limit person to person interaction. We will also have a materials kit with some classroom supplies including pencils and crayons available.

As we move beyond the next two weeks, we will continue to provide work for your children in digital format.  We are making plans for teachers to use Google Classroom as our distance learning platform. It will take time for us to train all staff on how to use this platform and we appreciate your patience.  Next week, you will hear from your child's teacher via email or phone about the future distance learning. We are planning to also have interactive options available so your child will be able to virtually join in conversation with their teacher and other classmates.

RVCS Distance Learning:

RVCS will continue to use their established online learning platforms. RVCS families will be getting direct communication from their principal and teachers.

Devices:  In the event that our school closure is determined to be longer than the current 2-3 weeks and shelter in place is lifted we are preparing to accommodate student device checkout. This will move forward based on need, device availability, and our ability to safely checkout devices to families in accordance with any guidance from county health officials.

Connectivity:  A number of local internet vendors are providing free or low cost internet options to families.

Home Internet:

  • Sonic: During the COVID-19 outbreak, Sonic is offering three months of free internet access and unlimited nationwide home telephone service to households with K-12, college students, or senior citizens 60 or older. https://www.sonic.com/cov19 1-888-766-4233

  • Comcast: You may qualify if you are eligible for public assistance programs such as the National School Lunch Program, Housing Assistance, Medicaid, SNAP, SSI, and others. https://www.internetessentials.com/

  • ATT: AT&T is offering low-cost wireline home Internet service to qualifying households: https://soc.att.com/3bgKWqZ English     855.220.5211 Spanish    855.220.5225

Students with Special Needs with IEPs:  We are actively working on ways to adapt our Distance Learning for students with IEPs.  We appreciate your patience as we develop a more detailed plan.

IEPs:  If necessary, all students with IEPs will have their IEP amended to reflect a temporary change in the service delivery model.  Your child’s case manager will be contacting you directly to discuss service delivery and any necessary IEP changes. The determination of the need for an amendment is based upon the amount of time that schools will be closed.

Annual, Transition,  and Triennial IEPs:  With the shelter in place, it is impossible to hold IEPs as we typically do.   IEP meetings will be rescheduled and held virtually. Your child’s case manager will contact you directly to schedule your child’s IEP, if needed, and work with you on the meeting type that works best for you.

Related IEP Services:  Students with IEPs that include Speech and Language Services, Adaptive PE, Occupational Therapy, Counseling:  Support providers will be contacting you as we further develop our plan for Distance Learning and service delivery.

Using our Schools During Closure:

If you bring your child to school to play--please do not let your child use the play structure.  The play structures are not cleaned regularly enough to prevent the potential spread of the Coronavirus. They are welcome to use the track, shoot baskets with their own ball, use the ball wall for handball practice with their own ball but they must keep to social distancing guidelines and not play with others who might also be on site.

RVCS Aprendizaje a Distancia:

Calurosamente,

Tracy Smith
