May 29, 2020 Dear Matanzas Families, As I reflect on the 2019-20 school year, I am struck by what a resilient, warm, and welcoming community Matanzas is. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Matanzas students, parents, and staff for continuing to build a strong and thriving community. Of special note are the truly tireless and dedicated teachers we have at Matanzas. We recognize and appreciate them no time more so than this year, where we saw teachers transform classroom learning to distance learning within a matter of days, all the while ensuring that students were learning, cared for, and remained part of the classroom and school community. Our Matanzas Dolphins have been through a lot together this year. We made it through firestorms, power-outages, smoke days, and a global pandemic! Despite all of this, or perhaps because of it, this year we have learned resilience, empathy, courage, kindness, generosity, and good citizenship. We’ve been through a lot together, and we’ve come through it all Dolphin Strong! As you know, this is my last year at Matanzas. As I say goodbye, please know that it has been my great honor to be a part of this extraordinary community. Going forward I will take pride in having been part of the resilience, positivity, and inclusivity at Matanzas. And, although I will be moving to a different campus here in Rincon Valley, in my heart I will always be a part of the Matanzas community--once a Dolphin, always a Dolphin! Thank you sincerely for trusting me with the education and caring of your children for the last six years here at Matanzas. I will miss them and you. I hope you all have a relaxing, enriching, safe summer filled with fun and family! And, no matter what 2020-2021 throws at Matanzas, I have no doubt that you all will come through Dolphin Strong! Fondly, Kate Westrich, Matanzas Principal

Dear Rincon Valley Staff and Families, As a District, we are continuing to monitor the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for reducing the risk of contracting and spreading viruses. We are providing schools with hand sanitizer and wipes to reduce the potential spread of germs. We are encouraging frequent student hand-washing and reminding students to cough/sneeze into an elbow or tissue. Our custodial staff have received direction to work directly with principals to ensure that classrooms are being properly cleaned. It’s important that everyone (staff, students and family members) take steps to reduce the spread of illness, especially to protect whose who are most vulnerable: *wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitizer *avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing, then wash your hands *stay home when ill, have a fever and limit contact with others *avoid contact with people who are sick *regularly clean high touch surfaces This is a dynamic situation and we are continuing with all school activities as scheduled. As we get additional information from the County Health Department, we will make adjustments as needed.

Dear Matanzas Families, Many staff members here at Matanzas have noticed that many of our students are expressing concern over the recent events involving US and Iran aggression. As is typical of children, their reactions run the spectrum from worried about a war to worried that something bad will happen to themselves, family, or community. World events such as these can also trigger fears and worries in children that may seem unrelated or “out of the blue.” We care deeply for your children, and are reassuring them that they are safe and cared for by all the adults around them, while encouraging them to also speak to you at home. Nevertheless, children are talking to each other on the playground and in class, which means they may be bringing worries suggested by other students home with them. Our home-school partnership is key, and if there are any specific concerns or questions that have come up for you or your children regarding current events or anything else, please don’t hesitate to contact the office, your child’s teacher, or our school counselor. Warm regards, Kate Westrich, Matanzas Principal 707-546-6183

Dear RVUSD families, We just found out that the scope of the PG&E power shutdown event has been greatly reduced which means we can now open three schools that were previously announced for closure. The following sites WILL be open for students tomorrow and Thursday: Madrone Binkley Whited Village Spring Creek Matanzas RVCS- Matanzas The following sites are still on the closure list. Austin Creek Sequoia RVCS-Sequoia If anything happens to change for these last 3 school sites, we will update you as soon as possible. Once again, we extend our appreciation for your patience and flexibility.

There is a potential PSPS event Wednesday into Thursday. If this shutdown occurs, it will be at Whited, Madrone, Binkley, RVCS-Sequoia, Sequoia and Austin Creek. Village, Spring Creek, Matanzas and RVCS-Matanzas will not be affected. There is a chance that there will not be a shutdown but if there is, here is the draft plan IF the latest information we have from PG&E does not change: Wednesday: If we lose power it will not be until 2pm so all schools will be open on Wednesday. We will continue to offer extended care after school even without power. Thursday: PG&E will start powering us back up on Thursday morning, on the earlier side. So, at this point in time we are planning on starting school without power if necessary knowing the power will come on some time during the school day. We are working on the details for sack lunches and phone communication guidelines. We have checked with our insurance company and the California Department of Education and have learned that we can have staff and students on campus without power as long as we can determine it is safe. We will use fire watch protocols, lanterns, and ask students and staff to bundle up for the morning chill. We will use cell phones and walkie talkies to communicate and let families know how to reach school sites if they need to. If there are any changes to this plan, we will be sure to let you know as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience during this uncertainty.

October 8, 2019 Dear Rincon Valley Union School District Families, Due to a PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event, we will be closing all of the schools in our district, including the district office tomorrow, Wednesday, October 9th. This means all after-school programs, such as athletics and aftercare, are also canceled. PG&E expects to shut off electricity to these schools because of the increased risk of fires. PG&E uses PSPS when weather conditions such as high winds and low humidity create a high risk for fire. PG&E has informed us that it will not turn the power back on until those dry and windy weather conditions have passed and that it could take up to 48-hours to restore power once the weather improves. This means that the schools will likely remain closed on Thursday, October 10 and potentially Friday, October 11. We will contact you as soon as more information from PG&E becomes available. Thank you for your understanding.
