Matanzas School
Dear Village Families, My name is Kate Westrich, and as of this week I am thrilled to officially step into my new role as Village’s principal! A little about me: I have been an educator for 23 years, including 15 as a classroom teacher. I have been with Rincon Valley Union School District since 2012 both as the principal of Rincon Valley Charter School and as principal of Matanzas. I have two teenaged children and have been married to my husband for 24 years. What a wild ride we have been on in the last few months! I would like to take a moment to recognize the outstanding teaching staff at Village, not only for the warm welcome they have given me, but also to appreciate how, earlier this spring, they transformed classroom learning to distance learning within a matter of days, all the while ensuring that students were learning, cared for, and remained part of the classroom and school community. As you know, RVUSD is planning as carefully as possible to re-open school in August. Please be assured that student and staff safety are the top priority in planning to re-open, and to this end we are following the guidelines from various state, local, and federal health and safety agencies as they gather and share information about the most up-to-date best practices. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns, or information you may like to share. Be on the lookout for updates both from the RVUSD District Office and from me regarding back to school in August. And, no matter what 2020-2021 throws at us, I have no doubt that we all will come through Village Strong! I hope you are all enjoying a relaxing, enriching, safe summer filled with fun and family. Have a wonderful (and safe!) 4th of July holiday weekend. I look forward to working with and meeting you and your children in the 2020-2021 school year! Warm regards, Kate Westrich, Village Principal kwestrich@rvusd.org

Dear Parents, We handed out over 1500 learning packets on Monday! It was great to see many of the parents and students drive through the line to receive their packet. Thank you all for the smiling faces and positive comments. We printed and assembled more packets over the last two days, and they are currently available outside the front door of the district office. Please come by tonight or anytime tomorrow to pick up the grade level you need. Once we run out of these we will not be printing more. Thank you! ¡Gracias!

Dear Rincon Valley Staff and Families, As a District, we are continuing to monitor the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for reducing the risk of contracting and spreading viruses. We are providing schools with hand sanitizer and wipes to reduce the potential spread of germs. We are encouraging frequent student hand-washing and reminding students to cough/sneeze into an elbow or tissue. Our custodial staff have received direction to work directly with principals to ensure that classrooms are being properly cleaned. It’s important that everyone (staff, students and family members) take steps to reduce the spread of illness, especially to protect whose who are most vulnerable: *wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitizer *avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing, then wash your hands *stay home when ill, have a fever and limit contact with others *avoid contact with people who are sick *regularly clean high touch surfaces This is a dynamic situation and we are continuing with all school activities as scheduled. As we get additional information from the County Health Department, we will make adjustments as needed.

We encourage you to follow the Center for Disease Control guidelines for the prevention of communicable diseases: -Stay home when sick. -Remain at home until the fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicines. -Seek immediate medical care if symptoms become more severe, e.g., high fever or difficulty breathing. -Cover cough with a tissue or sleeve. -Wash hands frequently. Dear RVUSD families, We just found out that the scope of the PG&E power shutdown event has been greatly reduced which means we can now open three schools that were previously announced for closure. The following sites WILL be open for students tomorrow and Thursday: Madrone Binkley Whited Village Spring Creek Matanzas RVCS- Matanzas The following sites are still on the closure list. Austin Creek Sequoia RVCS-Sequoia If anything happens to change for these last 3 school sites, we will update you as soon as possible. There is a potential PSPS event Wednesday into Thursday. If this shutdown occurs, it will be at Whited, Madrone, Binkley, RVCS-Sequoia, Sequoia and Austin Creek. Village, Spring Creek, Matanzas and RVCS-Matanzas will not be affected. There is a chance that there will not be a shutdown but if there is, here is the draft plan IF the latest information we have from PG&E does not change: Wednesday: If we lose power it will not be until 2pm so all schools will be open on Wednesday. We will continue to offer extended care after school even without power. Thursday: PG&E will start powering us back up on Thursday morning, on the earlier side. So, at this point in time we are planning on starting school without power if necessary knowing the power will come on some time during the school day. We are working on the details for sack lunches and phone communication guidelines. We have checked with our insurance company and the California Department of Education and have learned that we can have staff and students on campus without power as long as we can determine it is safe. We will use fire watch protocols, lanterns, and ask students and staff to bundle up for the morning chill. We will use cell phones and walkie talkies to communicate and let families know how to reach school sites if they need to. If there are any changes to this plan, we will be sure to let you know as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience during this uncertainty.

October 8, 2019 Dear Rincon Valley Union School District Families, Due to a PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event, we will be closing all of the schools in our district, including the district office tomorrow, Wednesday, October 9th. This means all after-school programs, such as athletics and aftercare, are also canceled. PG&E expects to shut off electricity to these schools because of the increased risk of fires. PG&E uses PSPS when weather conditions such as high winds and low humidity create a high risk for fire. PG&E has informed us that it will not turn the power back on until those dry and windy weather conditions have passed and that it could take up to 48-hours to restore power once the weather improves. This means that the schools will likely remain closed on Thursday, October 10 and potentially Friday, October 11. We will contact you as soon as more information from PG&E becomes available. Thank you for your understanding.

The district has just received a 24 hr. warning of a potential power shutdown (sent at 9pm on Sunday). From the limited information given, it seems that the affected schools would be Madrone, Binkley, Whited, Sequoia, RVCS- Sequoia and Austin Creek. A few reminders: If power goes out during the school day, students will remain on campus through the end of the day. If power is out before school starts and is not expected to be restored promptly, schools will be closed.

In order to comply with federal nutrition standards, we want to keep birthday celebrations at school healthy, fair and easy! This is a reminder to parents about RVUSD's new Wellness Practice for our schools: our teachers and staff will not be accepting food into their classrooms to celebrate student birthdays. If a family would like to send in a non-food treat instead, stickers or pencils are a great idea! Brainstorm ideas with your kids!
