Dear RVUSD Families, The PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) from Sunday, October 25 through Tuesday, October 27 will now affect more of our schools and neighborhoods than previously announced. We are expecting the event to alter school learning on Monday and Tuesday only. This shutoff event is now expected to affect Austin Creek, Sequoia, Madrone, Binkley, Whited and RVCS-Sequoia schools. Therefore, if the power shuts off, all students from all school sites will do their learning from their recently distributed PSPS packets. There will be no live instruction on Monday and Tuesday. We will be sending out more information soon regarding when PSPS packets will be collected and also what families can expect instruction to look like on Wednesday. Extended Care: Students in Austin Creek and Sequoia Extended Care programs will report to Spring Creek on Monday and Tuesday. Binkley, Whited and Madrone Extended care students will be housed at Village on Monday and Tuesday. We thank our staff for quickly adjusting plans and spaces to make this possible. We thank all of you for your continued understanding and support. We know that we must continue to keep safety as our number one priority.

Whited Elementary
Dear Whited Families, First off, I hope this message finds you all safe. It is hard to believe that our community is enduring yet another devastating time. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help support your family. On the family survey, some families expressed a desire for some emotional support for their kids during this challenging time. RVUSD now has a WarmLine to use to get in touch with our counselor. The phone number for the WarmLine is (628) 777-3577. This is a place where parents or students can call and request to have a school counselor call them back. The messages will be sent to the counselor at the student's school. Messages can be left in English or Spanish. School opens back up tomorrow, Wednesday, October 7th. Teachers will be doing a morning Zoom meeting with their classes on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week to check in, connect, and begin to get back to some routine. Friday will be our usual Wednesday schedule. Teachers will Zoom with their classes in the morning and then students can access the enrichment activities after that. Is your family in need of help accessing food? Here is some information from the Redwood Empire Food Bank: 1. Families can call (707) 523-7903 to set up a time to pick up an emergency food box from the main center at 3990 Brickway Blvd. You can also call this number if you do not have internet and need information on other food distribution locations. 3. Website- getfood.refb.org This site will show where food distribution locations are. Many of you have reached out saying you would like to support those who lost homes in the fire. We do unfortunately have a couple families in that situation, and more information will be coming out soon on ways to support them and show them some Whited love. Thank you! ¡Gracias! Calurosamente, Beth Acosta

September 29, 2020 Here are a few more RVUSD updates as we move through this week: School (Distance Learning) will be canceled for the remainder of this week. We will use this time to assess the health and safety of our staff and families. With so many families evacuated and trauma levels so high within our community, we must give time to repopulate and recover. This is a timeline that none of us can control. We will have an additional update to you by the end of this week, once we know more about the situation. This update will include a timeline/process for resuming Distance Learning. We will also have a cleaning timeline for our campuses so teachers and staff can return to campuses to work on site. If conditions allow, we will begin serving free meals to families starting on Friday, October 2nd. We will be serving meals from Village Elementary. Look for more information coming to you soon. Over the last couple of weeks we have sent home PSPS packets and/or learning plans. If you would like to jump into those packets/learning plans, please feel free to do so. However, there is no obligation or expectation at this point in time that this work be completed. Please let your principal know if there is any way we can support you or your family in these continued difficult times. -Dr. Tracy Smith Superintendent

Dear RVUSD Families, PG&E alerted us this morning that the district and many of our families will likely be impacted by a Planned Power Shutdown event scheduled over the next two days. We were informed that the following school sites will be de-energized for Tuesday and Wednesday during school hours: Austin Creek, Sequoia, RVCS- Sequoia, Whited, Binkley and Madrone. This power shutdown will impact our distance learning plans for the next two days. Please look for more information and details from your school principal and teachers over the course of this afternoon and evening. Regretfully Extended Care programs at those five sites will need to be closed for these two days. Home Study and Rincon Valley Partnerships can also expect communication from your coordinators around learning expectations for the next couple of days. For students who attend Spring Creek, Matanzas, RVCS- Matanzas and Village, you will also be getting information/details from your principals and teachers in regards to how this PSPS event might impact your child’s learning over the next two days. Although these schools will not be de-energized, learning could still be impacted by the power shutdown event happening elsewhere in our district.

We continue to wait word from the Sonoma County Office of Education and the Public Health Department. This decision aligns with other decisions taken by local youth sports organizations in our area. Dear Rincon Valley Staff and Families, As a District, we are continuing to monitor the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for reducing the risk of contracting and spreading viruses. We are providing schools with hand sanitizer and wipes to reduce the potential spread of germs. We are encouraging frequent student hand-washing and reminding students to cough/sneeze into an elbow or tissue. Our custodial staff have received direction to work directly with principals to ensure that classrooms are being properly cleaned. It’s important that everyone (staff, students and family members) take steps to reduce the spread of illness, especially to protect whose who are most vulnerable: *wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitizer *avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing, then wash your hands *stay home when ill, have a fever and limit contact with others *avoid contact with people who are sick *regularly clean high touch surfaces This is a dynamic situation and we are continuing with all school activities as scheduled. As we get additional information from the County Health Department, we will make adjustments as needed.

We wish our Rincon Valley Staff and Families a healthy and restful weekend. We are continuing to monitor communications about the Coronavirus. We do not have any new information about risks to our community, at this time. Our staff are cleaning classrooms and common areas regularly and are prepared to provide deep cleaning if the need arises. We encourage you to follow the Center for Disease Control guidelines for the prevention of communicable diseases: -Stay home when sick. -Remain at home until the fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicines. -Seek immediate medical care if symptoms become more severe, e.g., high fever or difficulty breathing. -Cover cough with a tissue or sleeve. -Wash hands frequently. We will continue to communicate with you as we receive new information and guidance. ~Rincon Valley School District

Dear RVUSD families, We just found out that the scope of the PG&E power shutdown event has been greatly reduced which means we can now open three schools that were previously announced for closure. The following sites WILL be open for students tomorrow and Thursday: Madrone Binkley Whited Village Spring Creek Matanzas RVCS- Matanzas The following sites are still on the closure list. Austin Creek Sequoia RVCS-Sequoia If anything happens to change for these last 3 school sites, we will update you as soon as possible. Once again, we extend our appreciation for your patience and flexibility.

There is a potential PSPS event Wednesday into Thursday. If this shutdown occurs, it will be at Whited, Madrone, Binkley, RVCS-Sequoia, Sequoia and Austin Creek. Village, Spring Creek, Matanzas and RVCS-Matanzas will not be affected. There is a chance that there will not be a shutdown but if there is, here is the draft plan IF the latest information we have from PG&E does not change: Wednesday: If we lose power it will not be until 2pm so all schools will be open on Wednesday. We will continue to offer extended care after school even without power. Thursday: PG&E will start powering us back up on Thursday morning, on the earlier side. So, at this point in time we are planning on starting school without power if necessary knowing the power will come on some time during the school day. We are working on the details for sack lunches and phone communication guidelines. We have checked with our insurance company and the California Department of Education and have learned that we can have staff and students on campus without power as long as we can determine it is safe. We will use fire watch protocols, lanterns, and ask students and staff to bundle up for the morning chill. We will use cell phones and walkie talkies to communicate and let families know how to reach school sites if they need to. If there are any changes to this plan, we will be sure to let you know as soon as we can. Thank you for your patience during this uncertainty.

October 8, 2019 Dear Rincon Valley Union School District Families, Due to a PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) event, we will be closing all of the schools in our district, including the district office tomorrow, Wednesday, October 9th. This means all after-school programs, such as athletics and aftercare, are also canceled. PG&E expects to shut off electricity to these schools because of the increased risk of fires. PG&E uses PSPS when weather conditions such as high winds and low humidity create a high risk for fire. PG&E has informed us that it will not turn the power back on until those dry and windy weather conditions have passed and that it could take up to 48-hours to restore power once the weather improves. This means that the schools will likely remain closed on Thursday, October 10 and potentially Friday, October 11. We will contact you as soon as more information from PG&E becomes available. Thank you for your understanding.
